For those not familiar with the Utica/La Salle/Peru area, Starved Rock Lock and Dam is one of the most facinating places for photographers. The Illinois Audobon Society bought the island across from the dam, Plum Island, and millions of different birds breed here. From late September to March, my favorite Bald Eagles come to Plum Island to fish at the dam. To get to the lock and dam go south on Rt. 178 at the Utica exit off I-80, go all the way thru town going south and right before the Illinois River bridge turn left or east on DeBennett Rd. The lock and dam is on the right side or south side of the road. There is a bird scope to look thru in the Visitor center. Here is a bald eagle from the lock and dam.
