How a believer and a non believer can see the same thing two different ways.

I find it interesting how those of us who do not believe in a higher being and those who do can see the same event two different ways.  Nothing wrong with that for the most part but it is interesting.  A good example, on Memorial Day weekend back in May Jenn and I were visiting family grave sites with my family who are religious.  We were at my uncle's grave.  He passes away just over nine years ago and he loved going to Wisconsin as we all do in my family.  My mom related a story about just after he passed away and was buried she and my aunt were visiting his grave near sundown and a deer walked to the edge of the wooded area next to the cemetery, looked right at them and slowly walked away.  My mom took that a a "spiritual sign."  Nothing wrong with that of course.  Does not do anyone any harm as in that case religion is not being used to discriminate.  Now me being an Atheist and a skeptic just saw that as something that a deer would do.  You have a wooded area where deer hang out next to a cemetery where people go.  Deer are probably used to seeing people and will probably stand and watch for a few minutes and slowly walk away especially near sundown when deer tend to venture out of the woods.  But people like to make connections where none exist.  It's a coping mechanism.  Nothing wrong with that in most cases.  If someone gets meaning out of something like that and helps them cope with the loss of a loved one no harm to anyone.  I just find it interesting that people find spiritual meaning in things that happen naturally and how a believer interprets things that can be easily explained.

Teen ‘Exorcists’ Claim Harry Potter Books Allow Demons To Possess Readers

There are still nuts out there trying to claim that Harry Potter books are leading children to witchcraft and the spells in the books are real.  Of course they have no facts to back up their false claims but then again, when have these self-righteous charlatans ever let facts get in the way.  It is also sad that this father has brain washed his daughters.

Pardon me a brief facepalm. It amazes me that some people can’t tell fiction from fact. Maybe it’s a kind of wish-fulfillment or hysterical blindness, I don’t know. What I do know is that the spells in the Harry Potter books are make-believe. J.K. Rowling has explained this on many occasions. Trust me, witches can’t wave a wand, say a word and *poof* – if we could, I would be living in a big house in Hawai’i with a view of the Kona Coast and a billion dollars in the bank.

When the photos are public, we refer to that as as 'creeping' or 'photo stalking'. And it's something people do but it's a little weird. If you're doing it by logging into someone else's account or looking over their shoulder, and they are photos you normally wouldn't be able to see due to privacy settings, it's even creepier"

Streator Illinois loses drug dectecting dog, Chief of Police rather cold about it.

When a police dog or any dog for that matter dies, this is probably not the way the police chief should announce it.  "Streator's newest drug-detecting dog, Riky, died of natural causes this weekend. Chief Kurt Pastirik said the dog is under full warranty and the city will be getting one to replace him."

The dog is a living breathing being, not a dish washer or TV. Plus the dog was a member of the police force.  That was a rather cold heartless way to announce the death of a member of law enforcement. 

Uncreative Christian Pastor Rails Against the Evils of Rock and Roll Music

You'll get a big kick out of this one.  Religious nut case preacher John Hagee said at a sermon this weekend that " rock and roll music "is nothing more than Satanic cyanide" that needs to be taken outside of the home and burned:"  

didn't we hear this load of crap back in the 1980's?  I think he's a little late to the table on this one.  Mr. Hagee, the 1980's called, they want there religious nuts back.  We have enough of them here in 2013.  I mean calling rock music satanic? I knew these nuts were not very original but this is so dumb it is almost funny.  I also wonder if he has actually listened to rock music.  Probably not,  I'm also guessing he's never actually read the full bible either.  Most of these preacher nuts have not.

University of Virginia student arrested in near fatal mix-up with police—for buying bottled water

The actions of the police in this case are inexcusable.  First, even if they thought she was buying beer illegally the use of this kind of force was uncalled for.  Second.  Maybe they should have identified themselves as police officers.  She had no way of knowing these baffoons were cops.  All she knew was some crazed nuts with guns were tryig to break in to her car and probably kidnap and gang rape her and her room mate.  To top it off, she had bottled water not beer.  Now I don't know about you but I'm legally blind, have very little eyesight and can tell a case of bottled water from a case of beer.  If these ding dongs can't tell the difference maybe they should not be police officers.  And again, a little overkill for someone you think is buying beer under age.  Sense these officers are apparently too dumb to figure this out I'll help them do this a little better next time.  If you think someoen is buying alcohol illegally pull them over, identify yourself and ask to see their what they bought and tell them what they are suspected of doing.  See, very simple and you don't have to act like a bunch of crazed loons to do it.  There was no excuse for this action and the person who gave the green light for this and actually thought this was a good way to stop underage people from buying booze needs to be fired, tarred, feathered, and run out of town.  Oh, they actually charged her with a felony too for allegedly hitting one of the officers with her car even though she did not know he was an officer.  Thankfully they dropped that charge.  Thankfully the twenty year old woman and her room ate were not hurt of killed.  I might recommend the bunch of bozo's running this police department re think their policy on how to deal with under age drinking.  My dead grandmother (may she rest in peace) could have handled this better.  At least the police are keeping the  streets safe from those juvenile delinquents who are buying bottled water.  After all that might lead to other horrible crimes like buying fruits and vegetables maybe even candy bars and potato chips, and we can't have that now can we.

One of the Silliest Facebook Religious Memes I've Ever Seen.

Ok, We've all seen Facebook mems Some are funny, some are dumb, and some are just plain strange.  I saw a religious one yesterday that trued to sight the source as proof of itself.   The meme had a picture of the bible and the caption read, "proof that god exists."  Really, That would be like me posting a picture of "The Lord of the Rings" series with a caption saying, "Proof Hobbits Exist."  or a pick of the Harry Potter books with a caption "Proof Harry Potter Exists."  Something being in a book does not prove it exists.  If you're going to convince me that this god of yours exists than you're going to have to come up with better evidence than the bible which there is  no archaeological or scientific evidence to back up any of the claims it makes.  Take the story of Noaa's flood for example. The bible tells us that god destroyed  all of man kind except for Noaa and his family. Who he instructed to build and arc to carry him, his family and two of every living animal one male and female so the Earth could be repopulated.  and after this arc was complete god would then unleash a storm that would last forty days and forty nights and flood the entire planet.  Problem is a storm like that is impossible.  The way weather patterns work just would not allow a storm like that to happen on that massive scale.  Just think of the amount of evaporation that would have to occur.   Also no evidence of such a flood can be found in the archaeological record. If a flood like that had actually happened it would have left some record behind.  Some would say, "well god hid the evidence."  That does not make any sense,  Why would a god hide such evidence,  if he were trying to teach huanity a lesson you'd think he'd leave evidence for all to see.  Just does not make any sense.  Plus we are still discovering new animal species so there is no way that Noaa could have had two of every animal on the ARK.  Also why would Noaa have needed to put fish on the ARK.  Don't fish live in water?  Seems no one has thought of explaining that one and how would htey ave survived on this Ark for that long out of water?  I'd love to hear how these people explain that one.

Also no evidence has been found to back up the story of the Exodus of Jews from Egypt described in the bible.  They kept meticulous records.  If such a massive departure of people had happened there would be some evidence to back it up.  What I think happened is the plagues described in the bible happened and the story of Moses came out of it to explain the events.  Keep in mind how many things were blamed on the gods or god being angry.  Pretty much every natural disaster was blamed on god being angry with humans for somehow disobeying him.  Now of course we know  that god does  not cause earthquakes, floods, etc.  We know the scientific causes of these things. Well most of us do anyway, Pat Robertson and his followers  still has not figured this out but they may learn it someday.  One can hope. The point is just because a book says something does not make it true.

More Stupidity from Pat Robertson, God Caused Midwest Tornadoes Because People Did Not Pray Enough (Video)

In other words he is saying god is mad at people for not praying enough so he sends storms to cause destruction and death to get people to pray?   It made sense to believe that line of thinking back in let's say 1587 but we actually do know what causes tornadoes now.  I won't explain it to you Mr. Robertson as I'm sure it is too beyond your scope of understanding and your small mind mind might not be able to comprehend how weather patterns actually work, but Pat, it has nothing to do with the gods being angry.  You might want to pull your thinking out of the sixteenth century.  Also that makes God seem like a ten year old boy who is mad because he did not get his way so he's throwing a temper tantrum.

NOT so NICECAST, do not use, it does not work

I have tried to use NICECAST BY Rogue Amoeba however after uninstalling and reinstalling the PAID FOR version, it still is not working. When I contacted Rogue Amoeba the first time on 5/13, I sent them screen shots of all the settings. Since then, 7 emails I have sent asking for this to be refunded to me. 59.00. They still refuse to refund for software that DOES NOT WORK.  I have changed the settings to the default servers as when installed new.

More proof that Psychics are frauds. Psychic Silvia Browne told Amanda Berry's mother she was Dead back in 2004 on The Montel Williams Show

Wonder how Ms Browne is going to explain this one as Amanda, her six year old daughter and two other women were found alive in a Cleveland home on Tuesday May Sixth. .  You'd think people would stop paying any attention to these people who do nothing but take advantage of those in their time of grief.

More Harmful effects of Abstinence Only Educationi.

Elizabeth Smart, who made national headlines when she was kidnapped from her home at the age of fourteen and found alive nine months later, Now in her mid-twenties, Smart runs a foundation to help educate children about sexual crimes. She now believes that children should grow up learning that “you will always have value and nothing can change that.” recently spoke at John's Hopkins University and said that Abstinence only education teaches rape victims that they are "dirty, filthy, and worthless."  A horrible message to be sending young women.

From the article,  "Smart said she “felt so dirty and so filthy” after she was raped by her captor, and she understands why someone wouldn’t run “because of that alone.”

Smart spoke at a Johns Hopkins human trafficking forum, saying she was raised in a religious household and recalled a school teacher who spoke once about abstinence and compared sex to chewing gum.

“I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, I’m that chewed up piece of gum, nobody re-chews a piece of gum, you throw it away.’ And that’s how easy it is to feel like you no longer have worth, you no longer have value,” Smart said. “Why would it even be worth screaming out? Why would it even make a difference if you are rescued? Your life still has no value.”

Abstinence only education clearly does not work and is dangerous.  It needs to be stopped and actual sex education needs to take place.


It is also interesting that the states that push abstinence only education have the highest rates of teen pregnancy and the highest ratees of secually transmitted diseases

From the dumb law suit department Peoria man reportedly files suit against Derrick Rose

In the suit he claims that Rose's absence caused him mental distress and caused him to become obese.  I've heard of some dumb law suits but this has to be one of the dumbest I've heard of.  If a basketball players injury caused Mr. Thompson to have these issues I'd say he either has deeper problems or is looking for a quick way to make a buck.  I hope the judge laughs this guy out of court.

I know it's too soon for those displaced from the 2013 500 yr FLOOD.  But I want to do anything I can to get nationwide support to all those in the path of the FLOOD.  I am going to first talk to any businesses who can pledge storage space for future use, basic needs:clothes, food, drinking water, location to live until those can return home.  If you are a business or individual that can HELP, please use your local media outlets or Candidradio.com.  More info will be posted here as details go on.  I have no desire to take in cash myself for those flooded.  However I am going to talk to banks and see how fast local banks can set up accounts to donate to.  
I can think of a million things I use daily in my home that will be needed in the future for those flooded.

Backwards thinking GOP Rep Declares No One Except Those Procreating Should Have Sex, Especially Not Gays

So I guess he is saying that couples who are infertile, those like littleflurry and I who don't want kids, and older couples who are past child baring years are not supposed to have sex?  And what is the GOP's obsession with what goes on in peoples bedrooms.  Thankfully the tide is turning and fewer people are not so afraid anymore of natural biology.  A very interesting article on why many in the GOP are afriad of sex is below.

Kansas House Passes Abortion Ban Bill Declaring "Life Begins at Fertilization"

On Friday the Kansas State House passed a sweeping abortion ban that among other things states that, "Life begins at fertilization"  The problem with this thinking is that most fertilized eggs are flushed out during a woman's period.  Most fertilized eggs don't get implanted in the uterus.  So pretty much what these ignorant people are saying is that any woman who has had more than one period and had sex is breaking the law.  Obviously these idiots have no understanding of biology.  Then again who ever accused right wingers of being educated.

April Fools in North Carolina pursue state religion

Two Republican Representatives in North Carolina have proposed a bill that would establish a state religion. This bill clearly violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U S Constitution and would also deny North Carolina citizens other First Amendment rights.  These ignorant representatives actually think they can pick and choose which parts of the constitution apply to them.  It is both sad and scary that people like this get elected to public office.  Luckily this bill has very little chance of going anywhere and if it did it would be declared unconstitutional.

Hate wrapped in religion is still hate. discrimination wrapped in religion is still discrimination. You cannot use your religious beliefs to spread hate. The idea that same sex marriage will somehow "harm the institution of marriage" is just silly. If gays getting married bothers you that much than that says more about you then the same sex couple who wants to get married. All Americans deserve the same rights. Weather you be gay or straight you should have the right to marry. If you don't agree than you are for discrimination.

CNN Reports On The ‘Promising Future’ of the Steubenville Rapists, Who Are ‘Very Good Students’

I'm going to quote a couple friends who said it perfectly, "Wrong answer. They might have once been 'very good students' with 'promising futures'. Now, they are rapists. Don't try to make them sound soft and cuddly. Soft, cuddly people don't rape. Soft, cuddly people don't take advantage of people who are not capable of consent. They are rapists, and that is now their primary defining characteristic."

" They were taught well to play sports. They were taught well to do academics. Too damned bad someone didn't teach them respect for fellow human beings, and to obtain consent, and to NOT FUCKING RAPE PEOPLE."  

Does not matter how good of students they may have been or if they were great football players.  They raped a 16 year old girl, therefore they are rapists.  They are not the victims so the media needs to stop treating them like they are.    Horrible that a news agency would act this way.

The Letter I sent to our Local State Rep Fraink J Mautino of Spring Valley Illinois concerning his choice to support discrimination.

Last week I wrote a blog post and mentioned in our podcast about how Frank Mautino our local State Representative from Spring Valley Illinois  has decided not to support Marriage Equality in Illinois due to his "beliefs and how he was raised"  I wrote a letter to him expressing my views on the subject.  What follows is the email I sent to his office.  

Dear Mr. Maution

     My name is Keith Zimmerman from La Salle Illinois and my wife Jennifer and I have been supporters of yours sense you first ran for office.  We both feel you have done a great job for the Illinois Valley area but we were both disappointed to learn you had decided not to support marriage equality in Illinois due to "your beliefs and how you were raised."  

     While you do have the right to believe how you want you don't have the right to use your religious beliefs to discriminate against others.  I was raised Lutheran (now an atheist) but I was taught growing up that we should not use our religious beliefs to discriminate against others. .  To me denying a group of Americans their civil rights does not sound very Christian.  Despite what you may have been told there is no evidence that same sex marriage has any negative effects on marriage.  If Tom marrying Sam bothers someone that much than I think it says more about the person complaining about it than the same sex couple.  In the countries and states where same sex marriage has been legal for a long time there have been no negative effects.  

     I believe all Americans deserve the same rights and that includes the right to marry weather they be gay or straight.  Denying these Americans their civil right to marry is unAmerican and UnChristain.  You don't even need to go to a church to get married in this country.  You can go to the court house and get married by a judge.  Proves right there that it is a civil right.  Also if we're going to decide things based on the bible than should we start stoning woman to death who are not virgins on their wedding night, should we stone people to death for working on Sundays, should we start requiring women to marry their rapists,  All those things and many others  are in the bible too.  So trying to use the bible as a reason for weather we should legalize something is a pretty weak argument.  Also the constitution should be used for giving rights not taking them away.    In closing I would just like to add that discrimination for religious reasons is still discrimination.  You cannot use your religious beliefs to discriminate against a group of people just because you don't like who they fall in love with.  Now you said part of your reason for not voting yes on marriage equality was because of "how you were raised"  I hope you were not raised to discriminate.  That does not sound very Christian to me.

Illinois State Rep Frank Mautino does not support Same Sex Marriage due to his "Religious Beliefs"

As you know if you listen to our podcast or read the blog posts Little Flurry and I are in support of same sex marriage. Illinois could be the next state to make marriage equality the law as it should be.  It saddened us to see that our local State Representative Frank Mautino of Spring Valley Illinois has come out against marriage equality sighting his, "Religious beliefs and how he was raised."  It saddens me when people use their religious beliefs to push discrimination.    If Mr. Mautino was raised to believe that discrimination of others for religious reasons is OK. then he was raised wrong.   While he certainly has the right to believe what ever he wants, he cannot use his religious beliefs to push discrimination.  Discrimination due to religion is still discrimination.  If that is the kind of god he believe in than I want no part of a god like that.  I do hope and believe that most of our congressional members here in Illinois are more open minded and don't give in to discriminatory thinking by those like Frank Mautino and do the right thing and make marriage equality the law in Illinois.  These people should not be allowed to dictate our civil rights based on the parts of the bible they choose to believe.

Senator Asks For Proof Of Evolution, Discovers He Doesn't Actually Understand What It Is

Now this is funny, but also sad that some of the leaders in our country don't understand basic science.
