More Harmful effects of Abstinence Only Educationi.

Elizabeth Smart, who made national headlines when she was kidnapped from her home at the age of fourteen and found alive nine months later, Now in her mid-twenties, Smart runs a foundation to help educate children about sexual crimes. She now believes that children should grow up learning that “you will always have value and nothing can change that.” recently spoke at John's Hopkins University and said that Abstinence only education teaches rape victims that they are "dirty, filthy, and worthless."  A horrible message to be sending young women.

From the article,  "Smart said she “felt so dirty and so filthy” after she was raped by her captor, and she understands why someone wouldn’t run “because of that alone.”
Smart spoke at a Johns Hopkins human trafficking forum, saying she was raised in a religious household and recalled a school teacher who spoke once about abstinence and compared sex to chewing gum.
“I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, I’m that chewed up piece of gum, nobody re-chews a piece of gum, you throw it away.’ And that’s how easy it is to feel like you no longer have worth, you no longer have value,” Smart said. “Why would it even be worth screaming out? Why would it even make a difference if you are rescued? Your life still has no value.”

Full article here

Abstinence only education clearly does not work and is dangerous.  It needs to be stopped and actual sex education needs to take place.

It is also interesting that the states that push abstinence only education have the highest rates of teen pregnancy and the highest ratees of secually transmitted diseases

From the dumb law suit department Peoria man reportedly files suit against Derrick Rose

In the suit he claims that Rose's absence caused him mental distress and caused him to become obese.  I've heard of some dumb law suits but this has to be one of the dumbest I've heard of.  If a basketball players injury caused Mr. Thompson to have these issues I'd say he either has deeper problems or is looking for a quick way to make a buck.  I hope the judge laughs this guy out of court.

I know it's too soon for those displaced from the 2013 500 yr FLOOD.  But I want to do anything I can to get nationwide support to all those in the path of the FLOOD.  I am going to first talk to any businesses who can pledge storage space for future use, basic needs:clothes, food, drinking water, location to live until those can return home.  If you are a business or individual that can HELP, please use your local media outlets or Candidradio.com.  More info will be posted here as details go on.  I have no desire to take in cash myself for those flooded.  However I am going to talk to banks and see how fast local banks can set up accounts to donate to.
I can think of a million things I use daily in my home that will be needed in the future for those flooded.

Backwards thinking GOP Rep Declares No One Except Those Procreating Should Have Sex, Especially Not Gays

So I guess he is saying that couples who are infertile, those like littleflurry and I who don't want kids, and older couples who are past child baring years are not supposed to have sex?  And what is the GOP's obsession with what goes on in peoples bedrooms.  Thankfully the tide is turning and fewer people are not so afraid anymore of natural biology.  A very interesting article on why many in the GOP are afriad of sex is below.

article here

From the article.

"As the states wrangle with the issues of marriage equality and the decriminalization of human behavior as related to consensual, adult sex, the voices of the frightened, the backward, the narrow-minded and the bigots come forward, if not louder, in some cases, crazier. They are, thankfully, becoming outnumbered by those who realize the cultural tide has turned, that despite the hysteria of GOP Christian fundamentalists like Rick Santorum (seen raging here about the suicide of Republicans if they choose to side with marriage equality) or Rep. Hagstrom, America-at-large is slowly becoming weary of this battle, ready to embrace the biology of it all; ready to put aside religious myopia and intolerance to simply accept others as they are, without judgment and certainly without legal intervention, and get on with other issue of importance. Hagstrom and Santorum, quite frankly, are very much on the wrong side of history."

Kansas House Passes Abortion Ban Bill Declaring "Life Begins at Fertilization"

On Friday the Kansas State House passed a sweeping abortion ban that among other things states that, "Life begins at fertilization"  The problem with this thinking is that most fertilized eggs are flushed out during a woman's period.  Most fertilized eggs don't get implanted in the uterus.  So pretty much what these ignorant people are saying is that any woman who has had more than one period and had sex is breaking the law.  Obviously these idiots have no understanding of biology.  Then again who ever accused right wingers of being educated.

April Fools in North Carolina pursue state religion

Two Republican Representatives in North Carolina have proposed a bill that would establish a state religion. This bill clearly violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U S Constitution and would also deny North Carolina citizens other First Amendment rights.  These ignorant representatives actually think they can pick and choose which parts of the constitution apply to them.  It is both sad and scary that people like this get elected to public office.  Luckily this bill has very little chance of going anywhere and if it did it would be declared unconstitutional.

Here's the full article.

What's even scarier and sadder is they have other ignorant Republicans in the North Carolina House who actually support this bill.

Top Ten Most Ridiculous Republican Anti-Gay Comments, Including Justice Scalia

Hate wrapped in religion is still hate. discrimination wrapped in religion is still discrimination. You cannot use your religious beliefs to spread hate. The idea that same sex marriage will somehow "harm the institution of marriage" is just silly. If gays getting married bothers you that much than that says more about you then the same sex couple who wants to get married. All Americans deserve the same rights. Weather you be gay or straight you should have the right to marry. If you don't agree than you are for discrimination.

CNN Reports On The ‘Promising Future’ of the Steubenville Rapists, Who Are ‘Very Good Students’

I'm going to quote a couple friends who said it perfectly, "Wrong answer. They might have once been 'very good students' with 'promising futures'. Now, they are rapists. Don't try to make them sound soft and cuddly. Soft, cuddly people don't rape. Soft, cuddly people don't take advantage of people who are not capable of consent. They are rapists, and that is now their primary defining characteristic."

" They were taught well to play sports. They were taught well to do academics. Too damned bad someone didn't teach them respect for fellow human beings, and to obtain consent, and to NOT FUCKING RAPE PEOPLE."

Does not matter how good of students they may have been or if they were great football players.  They raped a 16 year old girl, therefore they are rapists.  They are not the victims so the media needs to stop treating them like they are.    Horrible that a news agency would act this way.

The Letter I sent to our Local State Rep Fraink J Mautino of Spring Valley Illinois concerning his choice to support discrimination.

Last week I wrote a blog post and mentioned in our podcast about how Frank Mautino our local State Representative from Spring Valley Illinois  has decided not to support Marriage Equality in Illinois due to his "beliefs and how he was raised"  I wrote a letter to him expressing my views on the subject.  What follows is the email I sent to his office.

Dear Mr. Maution

My name is Keith Zimmerman from La Salle Illinois and my wife Jennifer and I have been supporters of yours sense you first ran for office.  We both feel you have done a great job for the Illinois Valley area but we were both disappointed to learn you had decided not to support marriage equality in Illinois due to "your beliefs and how you were raised."

While you do have the right to believe how you want you don't have the right to use your religious beliefs to discriminate against others.  I was raised Lutheran (now an atheist) but I was taught growing up that we should not use our religious beliefs to discriminate against others. .  To me denying a group of Americans their civil rights does not sound very Christian.  Despite what you may have been told there is no evidence that same sex marriage has any negative effects on marriage.  If Tom marrying Sam bothers someone that much than I think it says more about the person complaining about it than the same sex couple.  In the countries and states where same sex marriage has been legal for a long time there have been no negative effects.

I believe all Americans deserve the same rights and that includes the right to marry weather they be gay or straight.  Denying these Americans their civil right to marry is unAmerican and UnChristain.  You don't even need to go to a church to get married in this country.  You can go to the court house and get married by a judge.  Proves right there that it is a civil right.  Also if we're going to decide things based on the bible than should we start stoning woman to death who are not virgins on their wedding night, should we stone people to death for working on Sundays, should we start requiring women to marry their rapists,  All those things and many others  are in the bible too.  So trying to use the bible as a reason for weather we should legalize something is a pretty weak argument.  Also the constitution should be used for giving rights not taking them away.    In closing I would just like to add that discrimination for religious reasons is still discrimination.  You cannot use your religious beliefs to discriminate against a group of people just because you don't like who they fall in love with.  Now you said part of your reason for not voting yes on marriage equality was because of "how you were raised"  I hope you were not raised to discriminate.  That does not sound very Christian to me.

Thank you for your time

Keith Zimmerman

Illinois State Rep Frank Mautino does not support Same Sex Marriage due to his "Religious Beliefs"

Posted by Zman

As you know if you listen to our podcast or read the blog posts Little Flurry and I are in support of same sex marriage. Illinois could be the next state to make marriage equality the law as it should be.  It saddened us to see that our local State Representative Frank Mautino of Spring Valley Illinois has come out against marriage equality sighting his, "Religious beliefs and how he was raised."  It saddens me when people use their religious beliefs to push discrimination.    If Mr. Mautino was raised to believe that discrimination of others for religious reasons is OK. then he was raised wrong.   While he certainly has the right to believe what ever he wants, he cannot use his religious beliefs to push discrimination.  Discrimination due to religion is still discrimination.  If that is the kind of god he believe in than I want no part of a god like that.  I do hope and believe that most of our congressional members here in Illinois are more open minded and don't give in to discriminatory thinking by those like Frank Mautino and do the right thing and make marriage equality the law in Illinois.  These people should not be allowed to dictate our civil rights based on the parts of the bible they choose to believe.

If you would like to contact Mr. Mautino and let him know what you think of his decision to support discrimination, here is his office information for both Springfield and Spring Valley Illinois

Senator Asks For Proof Of Evolution, Discovers He Doesn't Actually Understand What It Is

Now this is funny, but also sad that some of the leaders in our country don't understand basic science.

From the article

"Wikipedia defines evolution as "the change in the inherited characteristics of biological populations over successive generations." Creationism, on the other hand, is defined as "the religious belief that life, the Earth, and the universe are the creation of a supernatural being."
Key difference: Evolution is part of science. Creationism is part of belief systems.

In Louisiana, a movement to help get creationism taught in science classes hit a snag when this snappy teacher decided to stand up and explain how it isn't actually science. As the state senator starts asking questions, it becomes clear that he doesn't actually know how evolution works."

Black Minister's threat of Backlash if Illinois approves same Sex marriage called and Empty threat by law maker.

I agree, the anti gay marriage folks know their arguments are flawd and are getting desperate.  If your version of being moral includes discriminating against people then you're not really ar moral person.  As I've said before,  Discrimination based on religion is still discrimination.

Fake Jovan Belcher Twitter account to get Donations for Suicide Prevention is a Hoax

In the wake of a horrific murder-suicide involving Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, someone with a truly twisted mind has seen an opportunity to grab for a little buzz on Twitter with what appears to be a false donation scheme. The handle @Jovan_Belcher appeared today after the news about tragic events surrounding Belcher broke, claiming to be an agent now using the handle to ask for "prayers and sympathy," promising for every retweet or Facebook like, a dollar would be donated towards suicide prevention, and quoting last statements to the agent from Belcher. Inquiry has revealed Belcher's agency is not involved with the account — just some sick prankster trying to benefit from someone else's tragedy.

Why is Christmas a Federal Holiday?

From the article.

"The Government Didn't "Name it" Christmas
Yes, I see the point that the statute includes the word "Christmas" and that the word has a clear religious connotation (aka "Christ"). But, as the Christmas Wikipedia entry notes, the date of December 25 may have been selected as early as the 4th Century (more than a millennium before the U.S. government existed)! And it was certainly called "Christmas" before the federal statute.

If the government were to take a random day and call it "Christ Day" then this argument would be more compelling. But the date and name simply didn't originate with the government. Admittedly, the statute does still acknowledge "Christmas" but that is in line with the Court's rationale, which I explain below.

"The Calendar of Public Activities"
If you read the Court's opinion it offers secular purposes for the holiday such as "accommodat[ing] the calendar of public activities" and "recognizing the cultural significance of the holiday." In short, the "public calendar" had a holiday before the government passed the statute, and that holiday was "Christmas."

Letter to Radio show host Dr. Laura Pointing Out How Silly it is to use the Bible as a reason to do or not to do something (This is brilliant)

As anyone who reads our blog or listens to our podcast knows we support marriage equality so when this appeared on my Facebook wall I just had to share it with the rest of you.   Don't know who the author is or if it was actually sent to radio host Dr. Laura but it shows just how trying to use the bible to say homosexuality is wrong or really why we should or should not do things is a pretty weak argument.  As this letter points out in a rather humorous way, the bible says all kinds of things we are not supposed to do many of which would make life rather difficult to live.  So enjoy this one, it is great.  The letter starts off like it supports Dr. Laura's homophobic views but quickly points out how silly they really are.

Dr. Laura letter-

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of Menstrual "uncleanliness" - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there degrees of abomination?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I'm confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your adoring fan.

I do hope she actually got this letter or sees it printed on a blog.  I'd love to hear her response.

One of the dumbest comments I've heard about our choice to be Child Free

Posted by Zman

Now Littleflurry and I have heard all kinds of dumb comments when people find out we are child free by choice.  Trust me we've heard them all.  One of the dumbest comments is, "well god expects everyone to have children."  My response to  this is to say, "So you're telling me that this god of yiours who supposedly loves and cares for all human kind expects people to have kids weather they want them or not?"  Really does not make this god seem very loving or caring to expect people who have no interest in having kids to have them and makes god seem rather selfish.  Not the kind of god I'd chose to believe in.  To the people who use this stupid argument I'd suggest they turn the news on once in a whle and see how some people treat and neglect their kids.  Or just walk in to any Walmart and see how many people don't even pay attention to what their kids are doing.  Obviously there are plenty of people who should not be having kids.

If there really is a god and I don't believe there is but let's say there is just for the sake of argument, I believe it would expect people to make up their own minds about having kids.   One thing I have noticed from reading the bible, yes I'm an atheist but I have read it,   The god of the bible seems to only think of himself and does not really seem to care about what humans think or feel.  Not the kind of god I'd chosse to believe in.

President Obama signs 923 executive Orders claim is False

In the last few days an item has been spreading around the internet about President Obama signing 923 executive orders during his term in office.  A quick check shows this claim is false. In fact the ones in the article that are said to be signed to Obama actually were signed by other Presidents as the linked article shows.

The Annual Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday's Debate has begun and a Silly Debate it is

Posted by Zman

Looks like the annual Merry Christmas, Happy holiday's debate has begun, Too me the whole thing is silly. Happy Holiday's is said to include the entire season from Thanks giving to New years, Merry Christmas is said to reference that holiday specifically. I don't remember this being a big deal until the last ten to fifteen years. Up until then people said Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas and no one was offended by either greeting. and I'm seeing posts on both sides of the issue and to me the whole thing is silly. I mean how does someone saying Happy Holidays to you take away from your celebration of your holiday. and if someone says Merry Christmas to you even if you don't celebrate it why not just say Merry Christmas to you too in response. Getting all bent out of shape because someone wished you Merry Christmas makes you seem like a four year old. Same if you get bent out of shape if someone wishes you Happy Holiday's. How hard can it be to just say Happy holidays and a Merry Christmas to you too. Combine both greetings in your response. That's what I do when someone wishes me Merry Christmas. I say, "and a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season to you too." I personally prefer "Happy Holidays" because it includes the whole holiday season and what ever someone responds with I simply say, "thank you" It just seem to be a little childish to get hung up on a greeting. and that goes for people on both sides of this silly debate.  Sheesh,  seems like everything Christmas starts earlier every year.

Help us make Illinois a Right to Work state and NOT a Right to Fire state!  http://www.nrtwc.org/

RIGHT TO WORK: I found this to send letters to our gov officials. We need to ask others to do this as well. More letters=more action!!!  http://www.capwiz.com/nrtwc/home/homenew/

Charlie Fuqua, Arkansas Legislative Candidate, Endorses Death Penalty For Rebellious Children In Book

Seems the Republican Party is full of people who are just bat shit crazy.  and this guy tops the crazy pile.  As far as I'm concerned he deserves to be tarred feathered and run out of town.

From the article

"The maintenance of civil order in society rests on the foundation of family discipline. Therefore, a child who disrespects his parents must be permanently removed from society in a way that gives an example to all other children of the importance of respect for parents. The death penalty for rebellious children is not something to be taken lightly. The guidelines for administering the death penalty to rebellious children are given in Deut 21:18-21:
This passage does not give parents blanket authority to kill their children. They must follow the proper procedure in order to have the death penalty executed against their children. I cannot think of one instance in the Scripture where parents had their child put to death. Why is this so? Other than the love Christ has for us, there is no greater love then [sic] that of a parent for their child. The last people who would want to see a child put to death would be the parents of the child. Even so, the Scrpture provides a safe guard to protect children from parents who would wrongly exercise the death penalty against them. Parents are required to bring their children to the gate of the city. The gate of the city was the place where the elders of the city met and made judicial pronouncements. In other words, the parents were required to take their children to a court of law and lay out their case before the proper judicial authority, and let the judicial authority determine if the child should be put to death. I know of many cases of rebellious children, however, I cannot think of one case where I believe that a parent had given up on their child to the point that they would have taken their child to a court of law and asked the court to rule that the child be put to death. Even though this procedure would rarely be used, if it were the law of land, it would give parents authority. Children would know that their parents had authority and it would be a tremendous incentive for children to give proper respect to their parents."

Any God that would condone this action is not the kind of higher power I'd choose to believe in.  If that's his version of a loving caring higher power than no thanks, I'll pass.  If I believed in a god it would not be the kind that would condone this action.

30 Years ago Today (October First) The Compact Disk went on sale for the first time

While today Compact Disks (CD's) seem like a relic, back in 1982 they changed the way we listen to music.   Here is a great article on the history of the CD and how it was developed.
